Primary School
Welcome to the Primary Department of the
International British Yeoward School.

We are proud of our school, our pupils and their successes. We believe that the International British Yeoward School is special and the relationships we seek to develop with our children and their families, enables us to foster a distinctive family atmosphere. We aim to make the learning experience varied and inclusive and are ambitious with our desire to strive to achieve excellence for all.

Ours is a happy school, where the success of every child really matters. Everyone is committed to developing the knowledge, skills and understanding, which will enable your child to enjoy learning, achieve success, and become a contented and fulfilled young person.

Choosing the right school for your child is an important decision for any parent as there are many factors to take into account, and we believe that the IBYS is unique in that our teaching is individual, innovative and inspirational.

At present there are approximately 160 children on role, from Early Years to Year 6. Children benefit from smaller class sizes and are extended educationally and emotionally. Our school has a family feel to it, with supportive parents and teachers working together.

We have many facilities at the Primary site, which include: a large Sports Hall for PE and extra-curricular activities; an Assembly Hall for drama, dance and music; an ICT suite; a school Library providing a range of English and Spanish fiction and non-fiction books, as well as an Interactive Whiteboard whereby children learn through the latest computer educational technology; a large Art Room and two playgrounds with climbing frames. All our classrooms are well furnished and resourced, with a computer in each class. They are all comfortable and workable environments, where children's work is displayed and students have a place to flourish educationally. Children receive all lessons in English, apart from Spanish language classes. We also take into account local culture, traditions and festivals, making our school the International School for the local community.

The IBYS strives to create an atmosphere where all children and adults feel safe, valued and included. The kind of place where every child can arrive with a smile on their face, where there is a keen sense of belonging and a pride in their school. We believe that all children have a voice to be heard and that their care and education must lie at the heart of everything we do. This website can only give you a flavor of our school, so I would recommend that you visit us in La Luz and see us at work for yourself!

Aims of our school

The Governors and staff of IBYS are fully committed to the aims of the National Curriculum:

'At the heart of the education process lies the child'

During your child's time at our school, we aim to create and maintain a happy atmosphere, building on that which a caring home provides. Our basic intention is to help each child realise his or her maximum potential. Our aims are:
  • To create a happy and caring school environment
  • To help children to learn that courtesy, good manners and consideration for others are very important qualities
  • To ensure a command of basic English and an ability to communicate with other people
  • To encourage an enjoyment of reading
  • To develop a knowledge and understanding of basic mathematical operations
  • To encourage scientific curiosity and organize observational studies through the local environment
  • To awaken an awareness of heritage around us through project type historical and geographical studies
  • To teach skills in handwriting, handicraft and other creative arts including music
  • To encourage an individual appreciation for beautiful things
  • To provide an enjoyment of physical activities, drama, movement and to teach basic recreational game skills
  • To establish an environment within which children, all staff, school Governors, parents and future parents can work with each other for a successful achievement of these aims
  • To discourage language or behaviour that conveys that any individual or groups are inferior because of sex, stature, race, age, behaviour, class, religion, culture or ability. All children are regarded as equals at IBYS.
